A few days before Christmas we took Mekong Delta tour. The day was more than we expected. In all it was a full on day and certainly the highlight of our short trip to Vietnam. I could not fault it, the guide was wonderful and didn't just run their speel like other guides we had met. It was a great day, top marks Buffalo Tours.

Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City to Cu Chi – My Tho (approximate 33 kilometers cycling)
Departing at 8am, drive for roughly an hour as you leave the bustling urban sprawl of Saigon behind you. Once you have reached more peaceful roads it’s time for the cycling adventure to commence. The first 20 kilometers of cycling will take you along paved and dirt country laneways. As you glide through the countryside you will have ample opportunities to soak up the scenic surroundings. Surrounded by beautiful fauna and country scenes you will feel a million miles away from the stress of urban life. Arrive at Cu Chi at around 10:30 and begin your exploration of this historical area. Construction of this amazing series of underground passages first began in the late 1940s by the Viet Minh, when fighting the French. However, it was later when the Viet Cong faced the US Army that the tunnels became truly remarkable. This underground world was primarily used as a hiding place for guerrilla fighters. However, over the years the tunnels were expanded to include communication and supply routes, living quarters, food and weapons caches and even hospitals. During your tour of the site you will have the opportunity to enter a reconstructed section of the tunnels and get a taste of what life was like for those who used them.

Following lunch, enjoy a 13 kilometer ride through vast rubber plantations before meeting with your vehicle for the transfer to My Tho for overnight homestay.  Join host family to cook a dinner and learn about lifestyle in the Mekong.

Day 2: My Tho to Tra Vinh (approximate 30 kilometers cycling)
Wake up early and take a boat and drive around the four Islets: Dragon, Unicorn, Tortoise and Phoenix on Tien River. Through Xep canal visit traditional Mekong houses at Quoi An village (made all from coconut tree). Taste honey with tea or wine; have a look at the coconut collection sets and see how the locals make handicrafts from coconut trunk and shell. Take the horse-cart on a village path to Ben Truc orchard, enjoy seasonal fruits and listen to traditional music. See bees-breeding in wooden boxes at a local farm. Take the rowing-boat on water coconut creek. Then, visit a local coconut candy workshop, taste candies, a specialty of this province.
After boat trip, continue cycling 30kilometers to Tra Vinh. Overnight at a hotel.

Day 3: Tra Vinh to Can Tho (approximate 30 kilometers cycling)
After breakfast, drive from hotel to CauNgang ferry, then cycle  along rice paddy to CauKe. Visit some Khmer pagodas followed by Lunch. Drive to Tra On where we take local ferry to Luc Si Thanh Island then cycle through beautiful village roads to Cai Cui ferry onwards to Can Tho. Our van would pick you up and transfer to hotel for overnight.

Day 4: Can Tho to Cao Lanh (approximate 30 kilometers cycling)
Wake up early (suggested at 05.30am) for another short boat cruise to see the busiest floating market in the Mekong. Buy a coffee or a drink from a floating coffee shop if you like! Get back to your hotel, enjoy the breakfast, check out and take a short drive to Sa Dec. Then, cycle through beautiful country roads to a historic communist base. Get off your bicycle, take a scenic sampan boat trip around the base and be amazed how communists lived and worked during the war. Drive to Cao Lanh and stay overnight at a hotel.

Day 5: Cao Lanh to Ho Chi Minh city (approximate 35 kilometers cycling)
After breakfast and check-out of the hotel, we would cycle approximately 35kilometers through country roads to the beautiful GaoGiong national park. Take a rowing boat along mangrove forest to see different kinds of birds. Continue cycling along country road and enjoy the sights and local activities along the way. After lunch, return to Ho Chi Minh City around 5.00pm
