ITINERARY BY DAY
Day 1: Kota Kinabalu
Arrive at Kota Kinabalu Airport and meet with your driver before making your way to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing at your hotel before taking a stroll around the streets of Kota Kinabalu.
Day 2: Kota Kinabalu
In the morning, embark on a short boat ride to the Marine Ecology Research Centre (MERC), located at the doorstep of the Tunku Abul Rahman Marine Park and a stone’s throw from Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah province.
Nestled in Gaya Island’s quiet Malohom Bay, this protected paradise on the tip of Malaysian Borneo is home to a diverse collection of coral reefs and brightly coloured fish. Learn about rare species threatened by advancing climate change, including the giant clam, and the centre’s conservation program to preserve the park’s pristine underwater habitats.
Afterwards, settle down for a relaxing lunch before returning to your resort for a leisurely afternoon off. Spend the night at your resort.
Day 3: Kinabalu Park
After breakfast, make your way across the mountainous Crocker Range towards Kinabalu Park, offering spectacular panoramic views of the exquisite countryside. En-route, enjoy unrivalled views of Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia’s tallest peak, whilst traversing this idyllic World Heritage Site. Get up close with the park’s incredible range of fauna and flora, long admired by the world’s nature enthusiasts.
Later, take a rejuvenating dip in the Poring Hot Springs before embarking on an exhilarating canopy walk 41m above the Borneo Rainforest floor. Spend the night at park headquarters, 1,500m above sea level.
Day 4: Kinabalu Park – Laban Rata
After breakfast, make your way to the park registration office to meet with your mountain guide. Start your trek at Timpohon Gate and scale the steep rock faces and suspended bridges to Laban Rata Resthouse, located 3,300m above sea level and boasting spectacular views of the mountain range.
Day 5: Mount Kinabalu
At dawn, continue your hike to the summit of Mount Kinabalu for breathtaking views of the Borneo peninsula. Return to Laban Rata Resthouse for breakfast before beginning your descent to Timpohon Gate. Enjoy a hearty lunch at park headquarters before starting your five-hour overland trip to Sandakan, the second largest city in Kota Kinabalu and home to a traditional fishing village.
In Sandakan, enjoy a relaxing evening rejuvenating at your resort or exploring the surrounding nature reserve.
Day 6: Sukau
After breakfast, head to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, located in the nearby Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve. Learn about the centre’s rehabilitation program before taking a stroll along the boardwalk for feeding time with the resident orang utans.
Continue on a drive through the rustic countryside to the village of Sukau, perched on the banks of the Kinabatangan River. Then, travel by boat to Borneo Nature Lodge for your orientation and check in. Enjoy a lazy afternoon aboard a river cruise to spot the rare proboscis monkey and other wildlife congregating along the riverbank. Spend the night at the Borneo Nature Reserve.
Day 7: Sukau
Wake up to the call of native birds and other animals welcoming the dawn from the surrounding wilderness. Make an early start up the Kinabatangan River to Kenlenanap Ox-Bow Lake by boat for some bird watching and to snap some photos of local wildlife. Then, take a stroll through the breathtaking wilderness of Borneo before returning to the lodge for breakfast.
Spend the afternoon at your leisure, with the option to explore surrounding areas or visit some of the nearby villages.
In the evening, get up close with local wildlife and fauna on a boat cruise along the river to a separate stretch of the Borneo rainforest. Disembark and explore lush stretches of untouched wildness before heading back to the lodge.
Day 8: Danum Valley
Make an early start for Lahad Datu town before continuing on to the Borneo Nature Tour Office for a short briefing. Then, embark on 2.5 hour overland journey through the wilderness to the Borneo Rainforest Lodge.
Arrive at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge and enjoy a refreshing local welcome drink before settling down for a delicious lunch at the lodge.
In the afternoon, embark on a trek through the woods on the park’s exquisite nature trails and exhilarating canopy walkway suspended 26m above the forest floor - and perfect for getting up close with the resident population of monkeys.
Back at the lodge; enjoy a delicious dinner prepared in local style before setting off on a night safari in an open-air vehicle in search of the forest’s nocturnal animals. Spend the night at the lodge.
Day 9: Danum Valley
Enjoy breakfast at the lodge before setting off on a morning jungle trek to Colin Cliff, the Kadazandusun burial site. Afterwards, make your way to the nearby lookout point for a spectacular bird’s eye view of the Danum Valley before heading down to the “Jacuzzi Pool” for a refreshing dip. Later, enjoy a tasty lunch back at the lodge.
In the afternoon, embark on a jungle trek before enjoying an exhilarating tube ride down the Danum River. Return to the lodge for dinner before setting of on an exciting night trek through the forest in search of nocturnal natives. Spend the night at the lodge.
Day 10: Kuching
Enjoy breakfast and lunch at the lodge before heading to Lahad Datu Airport for your flight to Kuching. Meet with your guide at the airport before making your way by private vehicle to your hotel.
Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure, with the option to explore the streets of Kuching or sample local hawker food at the traditional-style open-air eateries. Spend the night in Kuching.
Day 11: Kuching
After breakfast, make your way to Bako National Park for your guided tour through this small peninsular, located one hour from Kuching. Home to seven distinct rainforest habitats, Bako is home to a remarkable variety of animal and plant life, including the famous proboscis monkeys, silver haired langurs, long-tailed macaques, wild boars, flying squirrels and monitor lizards. See its exotic range of unique plants in the thriving mangroves, including the curiously named strangling fig and carnivorous pitcher plant. Later, discover the unique geological formations snaking their way up the coastline and dotted with well-marked trails leading into the rugged jungle-covered hilltops. Find a secluded beach to settle down for a packed lunch.
Head back to your hotel for an evening of leisure.
Day 12: Mulu
In the morning, make your way to the airport for your flight to Mulu. Arrive at Mulu airport and meet with your guide before heading to your hotel.
In the afternoon, meet with your guide for a relaxing walk along a 3km plank to the mouth of the Deer and Lang Caves. Climb down to the bat observatory to see these chatty natives fly out of the caves at sunset before venturing back to park headquarters. Spend the night in Mulu.
Day 13: Mulu
After breakfast, travel by longboat to Batu Bungan Penan Settlement to learn about local tribal customs and the making of traditional handicrafts. Continue on to the Wind and Clearwater caves before enjoying a tasty picnic lunch at the Clearwater summer huts.
Afterwards, take a relaxing dip in the Clearwater Spring before heading back to your resort. Spend the night in Mulu.
Day 14: Mulu
Enjoy breakfast at your resort before spending the day at your leisure. Later, make your way to Mulu Airport for your flight home.
