Tet is the most important holiday in Vietnam, when families get together to decorate their home, prepare traditional dishes as well as to visit relatives and friends. The  whole city is filled with flowers, flags, lights and soon firework displays to welcome the Lunar New Year – the year of horses. –        2 places at Hoan Kiem Lake ( Hoan Kiem District)

–        Thong Nhat park ( Hai Ba Trung District)

–        Lac Long Quan park ( Tay Ho District)

–        Van Quan park ( Ha Dong District)

And other 24 medium-level firework displays around Hanoi.

This firework display is not to be missed if you are in Hanoi this time of the year! Around Hoan Kiem lake and the Old Quarter, no vehicles are allowed a few hours before midnight, so that locals and tourists can walk around to enjoy the Tet atmosphere and wait til the midnight countdown with fireworks.

Hang Luoc Flower Market

Location: Hang Luoc Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.

Prices: free entrance, open for public.

Hang Luoc flower market is considered the oldest Tet flower market in Hanoi. Started since the 1920s, this traditional market is opened yearly from the 23rd to the last day of the year, according to Lunar calendar. Hundreds of sellers gather here since early morning til late at night to sell cherry blossom and kumquat trees – two must-have plants at every home during Tet.

Music Events

Cultural show in August revolution square, Hanoi Opera House

Time: from 9.00 pm 30 January, 2014.

Location: August Revolution Square, No.01 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.

Prices: free entrance, open for public.

This special show is one of many culture activities organized by Hanoi’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to welcome the Lunar New Year. The last day of the year will be warmed up by many special performances from well-known Vietnamese artists.

It is a good idea to start the evening of New Year’s Eve here to enjoy the music and feel the atmosphere when Tet is coming so near. Half an hour before midnight, you can walk towards Hoan Kiem Lake to watch the firework display.

Spring Festival 2014

Time: from 21 to 26 January, 2014.

Location: Quan Ngua Sports Palace, No.30 Van Cao Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.

According to The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam, Spring Festival 2014 with the main theme “ Tet market” will be held from 21 to 26 January, 2014 at Quan Ngua Sports palace, Hanoi. Taking part in the festival, stallholders will be selling traditional food, a wide range of flowers, orchids, cherry blossom and kumquat trees. During this festival, many interesting cultural activities will be organized.

Location: Institut Français de Hanoi – L’Espace, No.24 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.

Prices: free entrance.

Vietnamese folk painting exhibition –Trio painting sets will display 15 traditional paintings which are made in the first half of the 20th century in northern Vietnam. This exhibition will be hosted by professor Phan Huy Le (President of the Association of Vietnamese Historians) to promote Vietnamese folk culture as well as conserve written material heritage. Especially, you will have a chance to understand the sophistication and the technique of color plate or brush painting from some well-known traditional villages and streets in Hanoi such as Dong Ho or Hang Trong.

Although Hang Trong painting is no longer popular decorations for the Tet Lunar New Year in Hanoi, the art of this traditional painting is still considered a symbol of our culture and aesthetic value of Vietnam. This is the best chance for you to discover the custom of the Vietnamese during Lunar New Year in the past.

During Tet holiday, especially on the first few days of the New Year, many shops, restaurants and other service points such as banks, post offices are closed. Vietnamese people are mostly off work from 29 January until 5 February or later this 2014. You will experience some strange quietness on the streets of Hanoi for the first 2 days, compared to the usual organized chaos. It is somewhat similar to Christmas period!
