As you explore this enchanting area, our local guide will explain the irrigation system that flows through the fields, called the Subak system. Day 3:  Candidasa – Lovina

Depart from Candidasa this morning and transfer to Lovina. Stop along the way for a visit to the “Water Palace” of  Tirta Gangga. A former royal palace, its lush surroundings, maze of pools, fountains and stone statues makes for a stunning and tranquil sight. Next, venture to Pura Besakih, the most sacred and immense temple of Bali’s Hindu faith. It’s commonly referred to as Bali’s ‘Mother Temple’, was built over a millennia ago, high up on the slopes of Mt. Agung.

It’s actually a complex with multiple temples, but the centrepiece is Pura Penataran Agung. Set against the volcanic backdrop, the mist rolls by making you feel like you’re in the clouds! Take in the view of the six-tiered temple terraced up the mountainside. Finish off this lush detour tucking into lunch at a local restaurant, with views overlooking breathtaking rice terraces and towering Mt. Agung in the background. Arrive at your hotel in Lovina, and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure in this quiet coastal town.

Day 4: Lovina

Rise before the dawn to venture out onto the sea for a morning of dolphin watching. Cruise out onto the water, and watch for up to five species of native dolphins jumping out of the waters. Watch them pop up along the horizon as the sky lightens and the sun rises with them. Marvel at this stunning backdrop before returning to your hotel for breakfast. Spend the rest of the day doing whatever you please! Whether lounging by the pool with a drink or strolling along the beach before exploring the laid-back town, it’s up to you.

Day 5: Lovina – Munduk

The centre of business and local produce, people from the countryside come into town just to see the wide variety of goods available in this former colonial port town.

Next, continue en route before making another stop at Banjar Village for a dip in the sacred hot springs. Located amongst the jungle these pools of sulphuric water offer a blissful bath in a charming setting. Once you’re revitalised, head to Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery, for a wander through its lush gardens, libraries and tranquil meditation rooms. Afterwards, continue onwards to your transfer to Munduk, arrive and check into your hotel.

Learn all about the local resources of the area before enjoying the cool breeze off a waterfall in the jungle. Make the most of this unspoiled natural beauty before returning to your hotel for the rest of the day at leisure, but be sure to get some rest with an early rise ahead.

Day 6: Munduk

Wake up before the sun, heading off into central Bali at 6am. Along the drive into the mountains, stop for a panoramic breakfast at Twin Lakes lookout, savouring the spectacular view with a coffee and fried banana. Arrive at your starting point for a short trek along some of Indonesia’s most untainted jungles. Your hike will bring you to a small temple deep in the foliage, were your guide will offer a blessing for the remaining journey.

Head off road now, trekking past some of the largest and oldest trees in Bali.  Keep your eyes peeled for monkeys hopping through the jungle canopy - if you’re lucky, you might spot a few before they disappear into the trees! Your next stop is a temple situated on a small hill and overlooking the smallest lake in Bali, Danau Buyan. Kick up your feet, relaxing on a 30-minute canoe trip across the picturesque lake. On the other side, disembark your canoe for a car bound for your final stop: a local restaurant overlooking lush Munduk. Enjoy your well earned meal, before transferring back to your hotel and spending the rest of the day as you please.

Day 7: Munduk – Ubud

Meet your guide at the hotel lobby to transfer onwards to Ubud, but first, stop in the highland of Bedugul, taking in the scenic views before visiting Ulun Danu Temple. A water temple on the shores of Lake Bratan, it is used for offerings to the Balinese water goddess. After taking in the tranquil surroundings, move along, with your next stop at Jatiluwih, one of the most famous and stunning views on the island. Admire the incredible panorama of rice terraced hills with its dramatic volcanic backdrop.

After lunch at a local restaurant, continue along your journey, making one last stop to visit Taman Ayun Temple. Literally translating to “beautiful garden” this is one of the loveliest temples in Bali. Discover its charms yourself, as you cross a bridge across the enveloping canals into the courtyard. Stroll along the footpath and take in the beauty and meaning of the nine-jet fountain. Once you’ve explored the temple grounds, finish your journey, arriving in Ubud for the rest of the day at your leisure in this beautiful upland town that’s not only scenic but also the centre of traditional dance and culture on the island.

Day 8: Ubud

This morning, head to a traditional Balinese kitchen to cap off the week with an exciting cooking class. It’s time to learn some of the techniques behind the dishes you’ve tasted throughout your adventure. First, head to the local market, taking in the bustle and incredible variety of fresh produce. Under the guidance of a local professional chef, handpick your ingredients that are all produced within the region, making your meal not only locally sourced, but as fresh as it gets.

Next, return to the kitchen to get cooking! Roll up your sleeves, and watch demonstrations as you learn traditional Balinese techniques. Now, it’s time to try your hand at crafting authentic local flavours from scratch, putting your skills to work! Once you’ve assembled your dishes, you can sink your teeth into the results. Enjoy feasting on the fruits of your labour before heading back to the hotel. Have the rest of the afternoon on your own, savouring the splendours of Ubud.

Day 9: Ubud

Balinese are deeply spiritual people, with the roots of the island's beliefs and traditions immersed in their way of life. Today, get a hands-on look at one of the best examples of Balinese spirituality in the quaint village of Sebatu. By car, depart your hotel for a quick drive to this charming part of central Bali. Home to a stunning collection of sacred temples, follow your guide's lead, exploring these structures and learning about how they still play an important role in the lives of pious locals.

After an illuminating guided wander, travel uphill and deeper into the village to visit temple that’s home to the area's holy water. Here your guide will help you put on a traditional Balinese sarong and demonstrate how to pray to the gods. Observe how each offering has a different colour, learning about the significance of each hue for each prayer. Now, dip into the holy water, for symbolic purification of the spirit. Once you’ve taken part in this important cleansing ritual, depart the complex for lunch at a local restaurant. Transfer back to your hotel in Ubud for the afternoon off, but be ready for an extravagant evening ahead.

From your hotel, head to The Chedi Club, for an evening performance unique to Bali’s colourful cultural delights. Marvel at the Kecak dance, an extraordinary performance by male community members, in which the chorus chants and dances among the flames capturing the imagination. Based on portions of the Ramayana and traditional sanghyang exorcism rituals, this performance stems from an artistic collaboration over eighty years old. After the mesmerizing show at the outdoor candle-lit amphitheatre, head to The Chedi Club’s restaurant for a royal Balinese dinner, a luxurious ending to a spectacular day.

Day 10: Ubud – Sanur

This morning bid farewell to the mountains and hills for the coast as you transfer to Sanur. After checking into your hotel, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Consider taking a stroll along Sanur’s waterfront, where a four kilometre beachfront walkway houses many restaurants and cafes. Furthermore, a trip to Bali Orchid Garden may be worth a visit, as you meander along blooming orchids along paved walkways. Whatever you choose, make the most of your last evening in Bali!
