With this tour you can:
Begin the day’s conservation-themed excursion with hotel pick-up and a drive through the gentle early morning hustle of Kota Kinabalu’s sunny streets. Following jetty transfer savour a 20 minute boat ride over shallow-water reefs shimmering with tones of polished opals and teeming with an array of wildlife. The serene waters of Gaya Island’s Malohom Bay greet you as you head to the Marine Ecology Research Centre – MERC. Witness the Centre’s efforts to both operate in an ecologically sensitive manner and improve the conditions of the breathtaking local habitat, located at the doorstep of Tunku Abul Rahman Park.
As you spend the morning in the protected marine area made up of five islands in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, learn about how MERC has employed state-of-the-art Biorock artificial reef technology to improve the growth and survival rate of Malaysia’s precious coral species by 80%. Follow in the footsteps of other visitors and be part of the MERC’s Adopt a Coral programme by sponsoring one of thousands of coral plants. Play a role in combating the increasing threat of extinction to the world’s last remaining giant clam habitats by supporting the Giant Clam Propagation Programme, which has successfully produced over 10,000 spats (juvenile clams) thus far.
After visiting the Centre, break for lunch and return to your hotel for an afternoon at leisure afterwards.
