Ask the friendly folks at Buffalo Tours (94 Ma May; tel. 04/3828-0702; www.buffalotours.com) about their popular Jewel of the Delta, a small but cozy river cruiser that takes you from Hanoi along the busy flood plain of this life-giving river. The Red River Delta is a very productive rice-growing region, and the riverside fields are lush with green. The day tour starts early, stopping to explore But Thap Pagoda by bicycle (double-check to make sure they have a bicycle for your height before leaving Hanoi), then on to various handicraft villages, and cycling to small off-the-beaten-path villages connected by narrow paddy dikes. On board the boat, enjoy a nice lunch and some time to rest before hitting the village of Bat Trang, an important commercial hub as early as the 15th century, and now a center for the production of fine pottery. You'll have plenty of time to rest and enjoy the sun on the boat's spacious sun deck before returning to Hanoi in the late afternoon.

Join Buffalo Tours for a first-hand experience of a Vietnamese ethnic-minority community. You will travel back in time when you spend a night with H’Mong people without modern conveniences. To get there, you will hike three hours through terraced rice paddies where you can watch farmers move water buffalo, woman do the laundry and children return from school. After lunch, you will meet your H’mong hosts who will tell you stories as you help them prepare dinner over an open fire. After eating, they may challenge you to a card game or offer you a drink before you retire for the evening. The next morning, your host will serve a breakfast of coffee and pancakes before you hike back to Sapa, Vietnam, traversing more terraces accented by the surrounding colorful landscape.

Today only two sections are open to the public, Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc, situated 60 and 70 kilometers (respectively) northwest of Saigon. Besides going through an expanded part of the tunnel, visitors can marvel at once-deadly booby traps or even fire off a few rounds at the onsite range.

You can go semi-private with a day trip through Buffalo Tours.
