Today go beyond the standard Phnom Penh tours, as you dive into the rich and vibrant history of the city. Sitting on the banks of the Ton Le Sap and Mekong Rivers, Phnom Penh is a city rich in heritage and post-colonial culture. Considered from the 1920s to be one of the loveliest cities of the French colony of Indochina, it was often called the 'Pearl of Asia.' Nowadays, as Cambodia’s capital, it’s the most populous city in the country and to this day, it is home to some of Asia's best preserved Art Deco architecture.

Start you Phnom Penh city tour on a tuk tuk ride to the magnificent Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda complex. Explore the elaborately constructed palace buildings and get a closer look at the bejewelled collection of Buddha statues, coupled with the 5000 silver floor tiles that give the pagoda its name. Now, walk up to the nearby National Museum, an architectural gem. Enter its inviting courtyard, marvelling at its traditionally styled terracotta exterior built at the turn of the century. The National Museum’s collection invites you to delve deeper into Khmer sculpture with works spanning over a millennium.

After working up your appetite, take a stroll over to Friends Restaurant, a social enterprise restaurant run by Friends International. This reputable NGO has supported marginalized youth for over 20 years in Cambodia, with many social enterprises specialising in training in the service industry, providing long-term employment opportunities. Enjoy the colourful atmosphere and lunch, with the knowledge that your dining will directly support vocational training for impoverished Khmer youth.

This afternoon, embark on a guided walk through the busy streets of central Phnom Penh. Starting at the water front, wander along from the Mekong to explore some of the city's best-preserved colonial architecture, from the city Post Office to the National Library and the Raffles building. Finish off at the magnificent Phsar Thmey central market, a fascinating Art Deco masterpiece that dominates the old city. Follow your guide through the warren of stalls and learn more about the everyday life of modern Cambodians. Finally, hop back in your tuk tuk to return to your hotel.
