With obvious pride, Thailand’s Tourism Authority (TAT) announced that seven of the Kingdom’s dishes have been placed among 50 of the World’s best foods.

This revelation came from informed travel readers of CNN in one of its Facebook polls. 35,000 CNN readers participated in the poll which was instigated due to impassioned debate based around an original article from 2011 debating the world’s best 50 foods.

Thai food has long been held in high regard by foodies from all corners of the globe. This is clearly recognised by the number of Thai restaurants in countless cities and towns throughout the world.

TAT Governor, Yuthasak Supasorn gave thanks to the number of votes polled by the various Thai dishes. He further stated that this was a testament to a solid gastronomic reputation that continues to grow, and is part of the Amazing Thailand, Amazing Taste portfolio the tourism authority regularly promotes.

The Thai initiative of “foodie tourism” is aimed at motivating tourists and good food lovers to delight in culinary journeys of signature dishes, food that is rightly renowned at venues throughout the Kingdom. It is the ideal way to discover Thainess through dishes produced.

The Thai dishes that made the list were Tom Yum Kung – Spicy Shrimp Soup, placed fourth, just ahead of Phat Thai – rice noodles stir-fried in 5th and in 6th the local’s favourite; spicy papaya salad or Som Tam. Two curries made the list; Massaman in 10th and Green Curry in 19th place. The very popular street food of Chicken with Fried Rice made it at 24th and another salad; Mu Nam Tok – Spiced Minced Pork came in 36th.

TAT plays a hugely successful role when it comes to the promotion of Thai Cuisine and have launched several initiatives. They have released various publications on Thai dishes, their ingredients and the best outlets for those delicious taste tests. They also sponsor many food oriented events across the globe. Last year they launched a highly successful campaign with the slogan “Amazing Thai Taste”.

It would certainly appear that the future of Thai cuisine is a tasty one. Early 2017 saw TAT enter a partnership with the renowned Michelin publishers to release the Michelin Guide to Bangkok and a partnership for a bilingual guidebook published by Gault & Millau in their Belux 2018 edition.

Further good news for Thai food enthusiasts, in May of next year the Kingdom will be the host country for the UNWTO’s (United Nations World Tourist Organisation) Gastronomy Tourism Conference.
