Siem Reap – Angkor Temples – Monastery

DAY 1 - Siem Reap – Angkor Temples – Monastery

Spend an unforgettable morning at the exquisite Angkor ruins. This stunning array of temples, towers and monuments date as far back as the 9th Century and are Cambodia’s most popular attraction – for reasons that will immediately be very obvious. Start the morning at Angkor Wat and prepare to be spellbound by the world’s largest religious monument (five times larger than the Vatican City). With five spectacular lotus-topped towers looming into the sky, visitors cannot fail to be awed by this majestic sight.

Next, travel to Bayon, known for its soaring towers endowed with more than 200 beatific faces of the Avalokiteshvara (a Buddhist figure embodying compassion). Underneath the extraordinary sculptures lies the smaller, yet no less impressive, bas-reliefs - shallowly drawn cravings that depict the life and battles of the Khmer and the ancient Thais.

After working up an appetite, enjoy a delicious lunch of authentic Cambodian cuisine before visiting a local monastery. Here, meet with practising monks who will happily welcome you to their home. Dive into the history and tradition of this other-worldly place and experience the unparalleled privilege of staying alongside the monks in their monastery. This immersive experience will allow visitors to learn more about the ancient teachings of the Buddha and to truly get a picture of what life is like for the monks of Cambodia.

Please note: Monks fast after 11am so no evening meal will be provided but snacks and fruit will be available. Accommodation is, as you would expect, simple and sparse. Modesty is expected so please bring clothes that cover the shoulders and the knees.

DAY 2 - Monastery – Siem Reap

Experience the ultimate in cultural immersions and rise at 4am to the sound of monastic drums. Join the monks for an early morning prayer before enjoying a simple breakfast. Once sated, listen to a short introduction to the various forms of Buddhist meditation, chanting and “the secret to concentration”!

This truly unique overnight stay is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
