DAY 1

Siem Reap Walking Tour Half Day

DAY 1 - Siem Reap Walking Tour Half Day

Take in the history, the culture and some of Siem Reap’s most awe-inspiring sights in this afternoon walking tour.

Stroll to the centre of Siem Reap and the glorious Wat Damnak Buddhist monastery. This magnificent pagoda and its lush surrounding grounds offer peace and tranquillity in the heart of Siem Reap. With huge historical significance, the grounds of Wat Damnak contain the largest public library outside of Phnom Penh and here, see monks, students and locals studying in serene, contemplative silence.

Next travel to the ancient and beautiful Wat Preah Prom Rath. Built more than 500 years ago, this pagoda has French Colonial architecture and huge grounds filled with numerous statues and sculptures. The oldest part of the site is the impressive front gate with Bayon style carvings similar to those found in Angkor Wat – a taster of the Angkor ruins without leaving the city.

Next head to the Royal Residence. This neat-looking building is one of the King’s habitations but it’s the lush grounds that really make this place worthy of a visit. Running alongside the river and home to Yeay Tep Shrine and Preah Ang Chek, these verdant parklands are home to hundreds of towering and ancient trees. The trees provide shelter for numerous beautiful butterflies and huge fruit bats that sleep contentedly by day and wake up at dusk to go about their nightly hunt.

Afterwards, head to the bustling Psar Chas (Old Market). Constructed in the 1920s, this colourful and expansive market has a wonderfully frenetic pace and is the perfect place to pick up Cambodian artworks, information about the country’s Khmer heritage and a multitude of souvenirs. Choose to head back to the hotel after this experience or ask the local guide for tips on the best places to eat and dance the night away in nearby Pub Street.

A whistle-stop tour that introduces some of the most serene and some of the most frenetic places in this fascinating city. Not to be missed.
