Shanghai – Tunxi

DAY 1 - Shanghai – Tunxi

Head to Shanghai Train Station and board China’s high-speed ‘bullet train’, bound for Tunxi, the central district of Huangshan City. Upon arrival, spend the rest of the day exploring this ancient part of town. Walk down the maroon flagstones, paving the historical Tunxi Ancient Street and admire the elegant structures and traditional shophouses lining one of China’s best-preserved old streets.

DAY 2 - Tunxi – Mount Huangshan

Embark on a scenic drive to the foot of Mount Huangshan, known as the sacred Yellow Mountain. Famed for its outstanding natural scenery, the UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts weird rock formations and pine trees rising out of a sea of clouds and hot springs; a scene so breathtakingly beautiful, it has served as inspiration for many poets and artists throughout history.

Take a shuttle bus to the cable car station and start climbing the steep granite steps, marvelling at the magnificent scenery along the way. After a three-hour ascent to the summit, check into the hotel and refuel with a well-deserved lunch. Alternatively, hop aboard the Yungu cable car and ride up into mountains.

After lunch, hike to the Xihai Scenic Area (don’t forget the camera!) and visit the Paiyun Pavilion, or ‘Cloud Dispelling Pavilion’. The thick clouds usually disperse in front of the pavilion, hence its name, unveiling a fantastic view of the captivating scenery. Next, witness the unique sight of Feilai Stone, a massive boulder balancing at a precarious angle over the edge of a cliff, before heading to Brightness Summit, the second highest peak of the mountain range. Afterwards, continue to the Xihai Grand Canyon, one of the most beautiful and untouched areas of Mount Huangshan.

Hike back to the hotel for dinner and fall into bed, resting the tired feet whilst dreaming of this mysterious fairy-tale scenery.

DAY 3 - Mount Huangshan – Shanghai

Wake up early and enjoy breakfast on top of the mountain before enjoying a morning hike touring the different viewpoints, including Shixin Peak, Lion Peak and ‘A Monkey Gaping at the Sea’, and taking in the stunning vistas.

After a last meal on top of the mountain, it’s time to begin the two-hour descent; once again, it’s possible to go down by cable car. Transfer back to the train station and whiz back to Shanghai onboard the bullet train.
