Board Victoria Cruise in Chongqing

DAY 1 - Board Victoria Cruise in Chongqing

An urban, thriving metropolis awaits in China’s brash and bustling Chongqing. Often mistakenly cited as the world’s most populated city (that honour actually goes to Bangladesh’s Dhaka), this city nonetheless has 13 million habitants and a fast-paced, futuristic feel. But, it’s not only stylish cocktail bars, sleek apartment blocks and towering sky scrapers here, there’s an unmistakable air of history, too. Known as the ‘Mountain City’, this sprawling landscape encompasses vast swathes of water, dense forestland and glimpses of life before the development began. Known for its deliciously spicy Sichuan Cuisine, this fascinating place also forms the starting point for scenic historical tours down the Yangtze or “Golden River” and the start of this 3-night, 4-day cruise.
Arrive into Chongqing, the city that hums with life. Be met by a friendly, local representative and taken to port to board the 5-star Victoria Cruise ship, otherwise known as “home” for the next four days. Enjoy the chance to explore the ship and perhaps grab dinner and drinks before departure at 9pm.

DAY 2 - Yangtze River

Wake to the sights and sounds of Asia’s longest river, home to history and outstanding natural beauty. Sail past tiny fishing villages and dilapidated temples as you make your way to this optional guided shore excursion (payable locally).

Located on the northern bank of the Yangtze is Fengdu or “the Ghost City”. This stunning landscape is packed with temples, bridges and sculptures all devoted to the afterlife. The mountainside location teems with wildlife and lush foliage, but the real beauty is the multitude of statues that adorn its slopes. According to legend, the city earned its name during the Eastern Han Dynasty when two officials Yin Changsheng and Wang Fangping came to practice Taoism. It is thought that through their work and dedication they managed to achieve immortality. Their combined names YinWang translates to “King of Hell” and this is where the story began.

All meals will be provided on board today so take the time to relax and watch the glorious sights of the river drift idly by.

DAY 3 - Yangtze River

Few sights have proven quite as dramatic as China’s Little Three Gorges. Picture towering rock cliffs adorned with lush green foliage, intriguing rock formations rising impossibly from the water and a winding riverbed sure to reveal something new at every bend. Lookout for the White Salt Mountains, where the peaks rise to 4,921 feet and, according to folklore, were placed directly on to earth from heaven. Each peak has something a little different to offer, the light starts to change as you approach Wu Gorge (the second of the three gorges) as the cloud mist descends and makes for a fairy-tale-like atmosphere. Winding for 25 miles and the deepest of the Canyons, daylight is short and the chance of eerie mist is high, the twelve peaks that make up this stretch of river appear and reappear through mist and clouds.

Considered part of China’s triumvirate, made up of the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Army, this stunning day spent traversing the riverbanks will be unforgettable.

DAY 4 - Yichang

Enjoy breakfast on this fourth and final day before taking in the world’s largest hydropower and most notable dam. This body of water is almost the entire length of England and makes for quite the spectacle. Disembark and explore this monumental area by foot to view the large open-air Memorial Garden which exhibits a fascinatingly large array of mechanical cranes and discarded feats of engineering. Be sure to take in the Huangling Temple, this stunning red and yellow temple is the largest ancient monument on the Three Gorges.

After a few days packed with outstanding natural beauty and fascinating works of modern engineering, disembark in Yichang and go onwards to the next adventure.
