DAY 1

Yogyakarta

DAY 1 - Yogyakarta

Welcome to Indonesia! Touch down in Yogyakarta in the morning and transfer to the hotel to check-in and freshen up.

Spend the first day in this marvellous city – nicknamed ‘Jogja’ – diving into the culinary scene on an evening street food tour. From Maliboro, the main thoroughfare and bustling heartbeat of Yogyakarta, explore the clusters of street stalls and open-air restaurants, tasting some local delicacies along the way, including Sate Ayum (chicken and quail egg skewers with peanut sauce), cireng (a popular tapioca-based, deep-fried snack), and a cup of kopi joss (charcoal coffee). Continue this foodie tour on a motorised rickshaw and end the night with a refreshing drink on North Square before returning to the hotel for a well-deserved rest.

DAY 2

DAY 2 - Yogyakarta

After breakfast at the hotel, embark on a tour of Yogyakarta visiting the city’s important landmarks. First visit the enormous kraton, the Palace of Yogyakarta, which was built in 1755. Explore its numerous pavilions, halls and courtyards, before strolling over to the neighbouring Taman Sari Water Castle. Complete with swimming pool, the former royal garden served as the recreation place for the Sultanate.

Next, head to Jogja’s old town, Kotagede, and follow a two-hour walking tour of this historic neighbourhood. Meander through a maze of narrow streets, learn about the city’s ancient history and admire the unique, multicultural architecture, blending Javanese-Hinduism and Islam influences. Pass by the old palace, the public square and the great mosque, and witness the remains of the tragic earthquake in 2006 that destroyed parts of the city, before sitting down for some local lunch.

In the afternoon, discover the beautiful art of traditional Indonesian batik at a hands-on workshop at a local batik production manufacture. Specialising in natural dyes, meet the knowledgeable founder Mr. Suprapto who will explain about plants used in the dying process. Under his guidance, try your hand at batik and create a special souvenir from this trip.

DAY 3

DAY 3 - Yogyakarta

Enjoy a relaxed morning before exploring the contemporary art scene of the city. Tour a variety of art spaces, stretching from creative collectives to sophisticated galleries, and visit some of the ongoing exhibitions. End this tour at an artist studio and get the chance to talk to some local artists.

In the evening, head to Prambanan, a spectacular collection of ancient Hindu temples. Comprising a total of 240 temples, this UNESCO World Heritage site is dedicated to Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver) and Shiva (transformer). Explore the magnificent grounds before settling down for a delicious dinner and captivating performance of the Ramayana Ballet. Combining music, dance and drama, watch the fascinating love story of two men fighting for the love of a princess.

DAY 4

DAY 4 - Yogyagarta

Get a taste of local life and travel to the quiet village of Candirejo. Located amidst lush rainforest and paddy fields, the rural town has managed to keep many of its ancient traditions alive and makes for a fantastic destination to experience authentic Javanese culture. Hop on a bicycle and meander through the picturesque alleys lined with traditional houses; watch locals go about their daily activities, harvesting vanilla, making cassava crackers and playing local instruments, before experiencing a cooking class. Try to master some of the traditional recipes and indulge in the culinary creations in the shade of a Pendopo, a traditional gazebo. Return to Yogyakarta in the afternoon and enjoy the last evening in this magnificent city before continuing the journey the next morning.

DAY 5

DAY 5 - Yogyakarta – Jombang – Bromo

Start the day with an early breakfast and head to Jogja Railway Station to board a train to Jombang. After a four-hour journey, arrive at Jombang Station and transfer to the hotel in the Bromo area. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

DAY 6

DAY 6 - Bromo – Kalibaru

Wake up in the dim hours of the morning and travel by jeep to Mount Penanjakan in time for sunrise. Watch as the sky slowly changes colour and the sun illuminates the outer worldly landscape surrounding Mount Bromo. Continue the drive across the massive caldera, known as ‘The Sea of Sand’, to the foot of Mount Bromo. From here, hike up the 245 steps to the top of the active volcano and admire the awe-inspiring vistas.  Don’t forget the camera!

Head back to the hotel for breakfast and a refreshing shower before embarking on scenic seven-hour drive to the small hill town of Kalibaru.

DAY 7

DAY 7 - Kalibaru

Set in the rural countryside of East Java, Kalibaru is a great base to visit the nearby plantations. Established during colonial times, spend an interesting and educational day exploring the various crops, ranging from rubber, coffee, cocoa and different spices, that grow on the fertile land. Learn how rubber is processed into tires and how coffee and cocoa beans turn into warming cups of deliciousness. Also, stop by some of the many cottage industries and watch as local craftsmen turn metal into kitchenware, before heading back to the laid-back town of Kalibaru.

DAY 8

DAY 8 - Kalibaru

Wake up in the early morning and get ready for another spectacular volcano adventure. Travel by jeep through the area’s beautiful scenery to the Ijen Plateau, one of the country’s biggest volcano complexes. Pass by fields of cloves and coffee and glimpse locals ploughing the soil with water buffaloes before arriving in Paltuding, the gateway to Mount Ijen. From here, hike up the winding slopes for about three kilometres and keep an eye out for local porters carrying large chunks of yellow sulphur, a natural deposit from the volcano. Some of these porters can easily carry up to 65 kilograms of sulphur on their shoulders! Upon arrival at the summit, be rewarded with the stunning sight of the highly-acidic, turquoise crater lake. It’s the largest of its kind in the world and a site for sulphur mining. Hear more about this labour-intensive industry on the way back downhill before returning to the hotel to relax after the day’s amazing hike.

The small island is surrounded by stunning coral reefs, teeming with abundant marine life, and boasts unspoilt beaches and crystal-clear waters. Dive straight into the refreshing sea and get up close to the colourful fish. After the snorkel session, refuel with a light lunch on board before returning to Bali mainland.

DAY 11

DAY 11 - Pemuteran

Spend the day at leisure, basking in the sun and picking up some souvenirs. Alternatively, join an optional trekking tour in the West Bali National Park. Learn about the different plants and leaves used for herbal medicine and enjoy the panoramic views over the island. Look out for jungle animals, including monitor lizards and monkeys, along the way and hike through a mangrove forest before returning to the hotel.
