ITINERARY

DAY 1

Explore Iya Valley

DAY 1 - Explore Iya Valley

Take the road less travelled and explore the enchanting Iya Valley, nestled in the western Tokushima Prefecture in the heart of Shikoku Island. Often overlooked by tourists, the smallest of Japan’s main islands is easily accessible from Honshu and home to some scenic landscapes and temples.

With a personal guide, start the day with a boat ride along Yoshino River until reaching Oboke Gorge. Take in the spectacular sight of the soaring, foliage-covered ravine cleaved by the rushing river before travelling to Kazurabashi Bridge. Made of woven mountain vines, it’s the largest of the three remaining suspension bridges spanning across the valley. Admire the unique craftsmanship of the 45-metre-long structure and take a thrilling walk across, 14-metres high above the Iya River. Continue along the path and enjoy views of Biwa Waterfall.

Next, visit the quaint Ochiai Village. Spread across a steep mountain slope, the hillside village is well-known for its traditional and well-preserved thatched roof farmhouses. Soak up the tranquil atmosphere and take a break for lunch before continuing this scenic day trip.

In the afternoon, drive to Hinoji Valley, a lush valley shaped like the Japanese character ひ(hi). To end this picturesque day on a spectacular note, stop at the Peeing Boy of Iya Valley. Stand next to the small statue of a boy, posed in peeing position at the edge of a 200-metre-high cliff, and take in the dramatic views of the valley below, before returning to the hotel.
