ITINERARY

DAY 1

Meet the Local Artisans of Kanazawa

DAY 1 - Meet the Local Artisans of Kanazawa

With numerous historical sites and considerably less tourists than Kyoto, Kanazawa is one of Japan’s hidden tourism gems.

Discover the coastal city’s cultural heritage and start this full-day tour delving into the art of Kaga Yuzen, a traditional silk dyeing technique. Meet the artisan Mr. Hisatsune and learn about the 300-year-old craft used for dyeing and designing Japanese clothing, including kimonos. Get the chance to try this artistic method and paint some sakura motifs on a handkerchief.

Next, visit Kanazawa’s most famous sight – Kenrokuen Garden – and stroll the extensive grounds, admiring a variety of beautiful trees, flowers, water features and bridges. Bordering the Kanazawa Castle, the green oasis is considered one of “Japan’s three most beautiful gardens”.

After lunch continue to the Ohi Pottery Museum and Gallery. For 350 years, members of the Ohi family have personally produced this special type of ceramic. Marvel at a collection of uniquely crafted tea cups and other products on display at their old family residence and talk to the pottery artisan to gain insight into this long-standing tradition. End this captivating day in Kanazawa with some Matcha tea, served in an original Ohi tea bowl.
