Luang Prabang – City Tour & Pak Ou Caves

DAY 1 - Luang Prabang – City Tour & Pak Ou Caves

Explore the highlights in and around Luang Prabang on this two-day adventure.

Spend the morning touring some of the UNESCO World Heritage town’s cultural landmarks; visit one of the city’s most significant temples, Wat Xieng Thong, admire the rich decorations and gilded façade of Wat Mai and continue to the former Royal Palace. Built during French colonial era, the striking building used to be the residence of the royal family and nowadays serves as the National Museum, displaying a collection of rare religious and cultural artefacts. After this cultural walking tour, escape the midday heat and enjoy a well-deserved lunch.

In the afternoon, embark on a relaxed river cruise along the mighty Mekong to discover the famous Pak Ou Caves. Overlooking the riverfront, the limestone caverns are home to several thousand Buddha statues, ranging in size and position, which have been left behind by devotees.

On the way back, make a quick stop at a local riverside village to observe weavers working on traditional looms.

To end this marvellous day fittingly, climb up 328 steps to the top of Mount Phousi, Luang Prabang’s sacred hill, and be rewarded with picturesque panoramas of the city and the surrounding landscape aglow in the orange light of the setting sun.

DAY 2 - Luang Prabang – Kuang Si Waterfall & Laos Buffalo Dairy

Wake up early to experience a traditional almsgiving ceremony. A longstanding ritual of Buddhist tradition, witness as hundreds of young monks walk in a daily procession to collect food in their bronze bowls. It’s both a form of merit making for the Laotian people and demonstrates humility by the monks. After observing this tranquil spectacle, head to the morning market and watch locals haggle for meat, fruit and vegetables.

With swimsuits and towels, swap the quaint town for scenic countryside and travel to the stunning Kuang Si Waterfalls. Watch as the incredibly turquoise water cascades down white limestone cliffs and enjoy a refreshing dip in one of the pools. Continue to visit the nearby Bear Rescue Centre and get up close to the adorable, furry residents. Learn about the sanctuary's efforts to rescue and protect sun bears and other endangered species from the wildlife trade before hitting the road again.

On the way back to Luang Prabang, stop at Laos Buffalo Dairy farm, a social enterprise that works closely with people from the surrounding villages, providing them with a regular income. Join an engaging tour of the farm and meet the friendly buffaloes; feeding them grass and bananas and treating them to a proper scrub. In a hands-on demonstration, learn how to milk a buffalo and find out about its many benefits. End this educational experience with some sweet treats at the farm’s café and indulge in a piece of homemade cake with ice-cream, all made from buffalo milk!
