Nong Khiaw

DAY 1 - Nong Khiaw

Start the day with a scenic drive to Nong Khiaw, a rustic village nestled on the banks of the Ou River in northern Laos. Upon arrival, settle down for a delicious lunch and admire the dramatic scenery of limestone crags towering over the river. Full and content, check into the hotel and freshen up before travelling to Pha Tok Cave. This network of three caves once provided shelter to soldiers and villagers during the American bombings of the country.

Alternatively, nature lovers can spend the afternoon hiking atop the ‘Nong Khiaw Mount View Point’. This three-hour round trip promises magical, 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside. Gaze as the river snakes its way through the stunning mountains and spot small villages in the distance before heading back down.

DAY 2 - Ou River

After a laid-back riverside breakfast, hop on board a traditional longtail boat and journey down the river until reaching Ban Somjam Village. Home to around 70 families, enjoy an afternoon of exploring the village, getting to know the local community and immersing into the traditional culture. Take a plunge in the Ou River to cool off and connect with the kids over a game of football. Observe the local women weave traditional garments whilst the men spend the day farming, fishing and hunting.

In the evening, sit back and watch a traditional ‘baci’ ceremony, a ritual performed on special occasions. Receive a piece of thread to tie around the wrist for good luck before digging into a tasty dinner and chatting to the villagers. When it’s time for bed, choose to stay in the house of the village headman or retire to a nearby bungalow. Both accommodation options provide comfortable mats, pillows and mosquito nets as well as basic bathroom facilities. Snuggle into bed and enjoy a good night’s rest within this rustic mountain village.

DAY 3 - Nong Khiaw

Enjoy breakfast in the village before saying goodbye and boarding a boat back to Nong Khiaw. From here, hit the road and visit the Pak Ou Caves. Overlooking the Mekong River, these two limestone caves are jam-packed with hundreds of Buddha statues, ranging in size. Sit down for lunch at a local riverside restaurant before continuing the journey north to Luang Prabang. Along the way, stop at a weaving village and observe the local artisans work on traditional looms and craft beautiful patterned textiles.
