Remember the Fallen: Sabah Historical Walking Tour

DAY 1 - Remember the Fallen: Sabah Historical Walking Tour

Begin this tour of Sabah’s historical sites at the Atkinson Clock Tower. Standing tall on a steep hill, admire the 50-feet-high, all-wooden monument and learn more about one of the oldest structures in Sabah that endured the destruction of World War II.

Next, walk over to Kota Kinabalu City Park to visit the North Borneo War Memorial, a granite obelisk erected to commemorate the fallen British and Australian soldiers during World War I and II.  Gain insight into North Borneo’s involvement in these horrific events, before continuing by vehicle to the Petagas War Memorial. Dedicated to victims of the Second World War, take a stroll through the memorial park and witness several plaques inscribed with the names of those who died during the Jesselton revolt in which several hundred resistance movement members and civilians were massacred by the Japanese occupying forces in 1944.

After this informative morning, take a break at a local restaurant and refuel with a delicious lunch. Once sated, transfer to Kundasang to visit the Kundasang War Memorial. Comprised of an Australian, an English, a Bornean and a Contemplation Garden, the memorial was built in remembrance of the British and Australian Prisoners of War who died during the Sandakan Death Marches as well as the local people of Sabah who helped the foreign prisoners. Watch a short video at the site to get more information about the infamous marches to Ranau and take a stroll through the serene gardens, whilst contemplating the fallen soldiers of these tragic events.

At the next and final stop – the Quailey’s Hill Memorial – learn more about the individual story of Australian POW, Allan Quailey Clarence, who was killed during the first Sandakan Death March.

After this revealing journey into Sabah’s history, travel back to the hotel in Kota Kinabalu.
