A day with the Buddhist Nuns of Mandalay

DAY 1 - A day with the Buddhist Nuns of Mandalay

This fascinating full-day excursion provides the unique opportunity to meet with the enchanting Buddhist nuns of Mandalay. Begin with an hour-long drive from the city, across the Irrawaddy River to reach the tranquil Sagaing Buddhist Nunnery. Upon arrival meet with the sanguine Abbess of the nunnery and hear about life in this captivating place. Talk to the nuns and marvel at the spectacle of hundreds of shaven-headed nuns dressed in bubble-gum pink and orange robes.

From the Abbess to the Thilashin (or novice nuns), these women are amongst the most highly educated nuns in the world. Listen as they describe their studies of Buddhist literature and have the chance to ask questions about their daily lives.

Take a stroll through the gloriously picturesque gardens and admire the beautiful and unique lacquerware Buddha before taking part in a 30-minute meditation session guided by the nuns themselves.

Next, enjoy lunch with every single resident in this sprawling complex. As is customary in Buddhist communities, the food is donated by the local community and cooked by the nuns themselves. Watch as hundreds of rows of shoes are laid neatly next to one another outside the huge communal dining area before enjoying a delicious meal.

This fascinating day will give visitors the chance to see a totally different way of life.
