Yangon - Golden Rock

DAY 1 - Yangon - Golden Rock

Depart bustling Yangon for Bago - a town with a long and rich history. Along the 90km journey, stop by handicraft villages and marvel at a tree shrine dedicated to spirits known in Myanmar as ‘nats’. For a sobering experience, visit the final resting place for almost thirty-thousand World War II soldiers at the Allied War Cemetery. In the afternoon, reach one of Myanmar’s most sacred sites Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda, commonly known as Golden Rock. Make the journey up to this immense, gravity-defying boulder and take in the incredible views.

DAY 2 - Golden Rock - Hpa An

Leave behind legendary Golden Rock and head to majestic Hpa An. A picturesque riverside town surrounded by stunning karst peaks and home to ethnic hill tribes. Discover the hot spring lake of Bayin Nyi Cave before exploring Kaw Gun Cave housing thousands of etched stone tablets alongside hundreds of Buddha statues.

DAY 3 - Hpa An – Mawlamyine

Travel to Mawlamyine, the former capital of British Colonial Burma which remains a major port in Myanmar to this day. Immortalised by the poetry and prose by literary greats, Kipling and Orwell, this riverside town still has a few vestiges of its colonial past. On the way, visit Kyauk Kalat Pagoda and stop at a viewpoint overlooking the surrounding wetlands.

DAY 4 - Mawlamyine

At nearby Kawhnat-Kadoe village, hear the tale of a legendary price war between two shipping merchants before browsing an array of ancient handicrafts at a local pagoda.  Return to town for a quick boat ride to Shampoo Island, aptly named based on shampooing ceremonies held by Mon kings during their reign. In the afternoon, visit Mahamuni Pagoda and the Yadana Bon Myint Monastery. Finish off the day by watching the sun set over the harbour.

DAY 5 - Mawlamyine – Yangon

Travel overland back to Yangon, making plenty of rest stops along the 7-hour journey.
