Yangon Heritage Walking Tour

DAY 1 - Yangon Heritage Walking Tour

Embark on a tour of Yangon’s historical sites and let each building contribute to the story of this fascinating city. For a special twist, receive pictures of the heritage structures before being renovated and guess the right one once arriving at the bespoke destination.

Travel to the Yangon City Hall, an impressive Burmese-style building and the starting point of the walking tour. Head eastward until reaching the Rowe & Company building. Now home to a bank, the striking structure used to be an opulent department store with the fitting nickname ‘Harrods of the East’. Continue walking to the Central Telegraph Office, an impressive British colonial building, and turn right to witness the iconic High Court, a red-and-yellow-bricked structure boasting a grand clock tower.

Keep strolling further south and admire the massive, white Rander House on one side and the imposing Sofaer & Co. building with its recently restored blue entrance on the opposite side of the street. At the end of the road, take in the tall corner tower and striking Corinthian columns of the Myanmar Port Authority building as well as the stunning, but neglected former Accountant General’s Office and Currency Department.

Next, take a short walk westwards to see the backside of the imposing Yangon Region Court, the Custom House and the Reserve Bank of India building before continuing in the opposite direction along Strand Road. Running parallel to the Yangon River, the boulevard is lined with several historic buildings, including the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation, the grand Strand Hotel and magnificent Central Post Office building.

Turn left onto Bo Aung Kyaw street and witness the Ministers’ Office, where General Aung San was assassinated during a cabinet meeting, before finishing this excursion into historic Yangon with a visit to the stunning St Mary’s Cathedral.

Transfer back to the hotel around lunch time.
